Disaster Capitalism: censorious the practice by a government, regime, etc. of taking advantage of a major disaster to adopt neoliberal economic policies that the population would be less likely to accept under normal circumstances.
We have, in this country, nearly 40 million people unemployed during this time of COVID19. We also have been told that there is no reason for government-run healthcare because we get healthcare from our employers. That is unless you’re one of the 40 million unemployed. Then you can, what? Die already?
Those who do have insurance, we have continued to see an increase in high deductible healthcare plans. If you aren’t fully familiar with what that means, it is an agreement between the insured (you) and the insurer (insurance company). That agreement says once you pay an agreed upon amount within a calendar year, any remaining will be picked up by the insurance company. High deductible often means thousands of out of pocket spending before insurance kicks in.
It is reported that over half of the U.S., before the global pandemic, were a $500 emergency away from bankruptcy. Now Gilead, a private pharmaceutical company, relied on $10’s of millions of taxpayer-funded dollars by way of the National Institute of Health clinical trials to come up with a COVID19 treatment, and they want to charge Americans over $3,100 for medical treatment.
This is saying that not only have you already paid into this treatment through your taxes but now this private company wants to charge you enough to bankrupt the average American 6X over for the privilege of being raked over the coals by vampiric robber barons. If COVID19 is such a health threat, wouldn’t’ the government do better to negotiate a lower price?
Oh, but wait, there’s more. Medicare and government programs have negotiated a 25% cost reduction. Remember when the GOP and conservative Democrats said that Medicare for All would bankrupt this country? What they didn’t tell you is that it would bankrupt the campaign donations to corrupt politicians. This isn’t just Republicans either. Corey Booker, U.S. Senator (D) who ran to be the presidential nominee, blocked a bill Bernie Sanders proposed to import drugs from Canada.
Canadian drugs are cheaper, because, again, Americans get raked over the coals. Booker would have lost campaign donations if he allowed such an atrocity as the American people actually not be taken advantage of, for once. That extra charge for Americans then pads the bank accounts of executives and politicians who hide their money overseas and direct their tax burden, from that money, to you. All the while, the very working class who are expected to go bankrupt with this COVID19 treatment, are the very people propagandized into screaming that Medicare for All is some vile form of Socialism that will only get enacted over “my dead body”.
How have we come to such a place where there are vast swaths of the working class that are in so much pain, that they latch onto the message of parasites? Whenever we, the American people, demand something for the working class, we are screamed at: “HOW ARE YOU GOING TO PAY FOR THAT?!” What they won’t tell you, though, is that the CARES Act (where literally money was magicked up from nothing), that was passed, giving a $1200 one time payment to workers in America, came at the cost of the largest upward (poor to rich) transfer of wealth in human history.
The New York Times even reported about bonanza giveaways to the richest people in the world. People like the CEO of Gilead pharmaceuticals, whose greed will not be sated until he is picking his teeth with your bones. The rich robbing the poor yet again, in perhaps our greatest time of need.
It is time to pass a national single payer healthcare system. When I was a solider in the U.S. Army, I was told that we don’t leave fellow Americans behind enemy lines. It wasn’t “soldiers”, it was “Americans”. Why is poverty and being taken advantage of by plutocrats and oligarchs not an enemy line we are willing to cross to save these same Americans?
If you truly honor America, if you truly honor our veterans, then you will join me in demanding from your Senators and Congresspeople, a single payer Medicare for All style platform. Hell, even the Koch brothers, who tried to say that Medicare for All would bankrupt this nation, found that it saves $200 billion a year over our current system.
So, it is cheaper, it protects citizens from being taken advantage of by vampires like Gilead, and unlike our current system that raises prices on insurance every year and will arbitrarily remove your doctor from their insurance profile, this opens up the entire country to anyone and everyone. No more “out of network” issues.
We really can do better. Sure, there are people who scream that Socialism is bad. These people are in pain and don’t know who to trust. If we pass this system of healthcare and they benefit, we then begin to deconstruct the brainwashing of America and truly lead ourselves into the future as we have established, through evidence, that we have the best intentions in mind for the American working class.
After all, if our current economic system is driven by 70% consumers buying on the market, and we bankrupt these very consumers hand over fist, we are creating they very system that will crash our economy.
Go now, grab your vampire stakes. Let’s go hunting, and instead of you and me hunting each other, let’s go bankrupt some parasitic billionaires while allowing the working class to finally have some dignified living conditions. Call your legislators today. We no longer have the privilege of not engaging in this most vital of policies.
